About or why I am here in the first place

So, what is this page? This is where I tell you all about the whys, wheres and hows.

The easiest question to answer out of all these is probably why I’m even here in the first place. I have always wanted to write. I don’t really know why or how that came about, I just always knew. Some people might say these things are like some sort of calling, or maybe it’s something else entirely, who am I to tell?

Like so many people with a creative inclination, I didn’t take my wish and ran with it, because of this inexplicable fear that surrounds being creative in any way. A lot of times, it feels like sharing a part of yourself, like giving away a piece of yourself, not being seen can feel like the world is rejecting that part of you, like you don’t belong, which you probably never have anyways. I don’t want to sit here and tell you a sad story, but I might have to.

I never had a youth. It was taken away from me by an illness. It took everything, my hobbies, my joy, my interest and it took my creativity. The one thing that had always come naturally to me. The saddest part is that I didn’t even realise how much I missed it, how much it felt like loosing a part of my soul. So now, I don’t care anymore. It doesn’t need to be good and it doesn’t need to be heard or seen. As long as I can write, I’ll be fine. And I thought to myself, if I never try, my soul will forever cry.

That’s probably all you need to know about me. I’m someone wandering through this world, observing, and sometimes finding things I like along the way.

This blog is about these exact things, the things I find in this little, broken world. So, basically anything that sparks my interest. I know that doesn’t fit the ideal of having a certain niche on your blog, but I decided to approach this as my own little playground of things. And my interests are hard to put into one singular place.

For now this is mostly going to be about culture and travel. Right now I live in Japan, so this is the main focus. This might change in the future, though. (Until the next hyperfixation ;)).

You’ll find a few categories already, so feel free to explore them! If you’re curious regarding specific categories and why they are there, just click on them.

I also set up a Substack for monthly musings and some additional stuff. Feel free to check it out, too!

About the signs in the articles

If you ever wonder about ō, ā, ū it’s a way to romanise Japanese writing, following the so-called modernised Hepburn system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn_romanization).

In these cases the line means an elongated vowel. Sometimes also romanised as ou, aa, ii, uu, ee etc., but we’re being a little fancy over here. This stems from the fact that the Japanese writing system has syllables that end on vowels and when two vowels meet, it becomes a longer sound. The pronunciation is flat-ish, which is why we use the macron (the line-) and not for example ^.

For example, Tokyo would be correctly romanised as Tōkyō (Toukyou) in this system. But as the word Tokyo has become fully adopted into English, the marks are skipped. (Maybe you can use this knowledge to brag to your friends?) This is an example of the flat, long pronunciation:
